“I like the contrast of modern interior with a historic skin(windows, siding, etc.)” ~  Chris Dawson Architect

Was there a cabinet maker, builder or anyone you’d like to give credit to regarding the inspiration, design, or decorating of your kitchen? Chris Dawson Architect (CDA)

As an architect, what were you thinking about as you did the design?

“Being in a modest 1939 home built for chocolate workers, the house and lot are small. When we bought the house in 1995 it was divided into very small rooms. We took down the wall dividing the kitchen and dining rooms and enlarged the opening between the dining and living rooms to create, essentially, one large space across the front of the house to improve the connection between people in all three spaces. This new front space was still rather shallow so we used glass and white wall cabinets to make it feel bigger and a walnut ceiling plane to accent the width of the space. I chose Carrara marble first because of its timeless beauty but secondly because of the rich contrast that comes with pairing it with walnut. The use of walnut for trim work, cabinets, table top, etc. grew out of a desire to match an antique corner china cabinet that we purchased shortly after moving into the house (might have been our 2nd purchase after a bed).” ~ Chris Dawson, Chris Dawson Architect

“Our son, Bryan Bellissimo(Encore Architects, Seattle, Washington) was the inspiration and designer of our dream kitchen.  He and I combined efforts for the decorating here and in the entire house.   We extend many thanks to Titan Builders and J H Meyers for the quality construction and cabinetry in our kitchen. Our appreciation also to Lesher Natural Stone, Quartz, and Tile for adding to the beauty and function of our kitchen with their product and workmanship. They came highly recommended and lived up to their praise.

Unique Kitchen Features:  This kitchen has an abundance of cabinets, drawers, a cooking hearth with pull out spice drawer and features two islands.

Was there a cabinet maker, builder or anyone you’d like to give credit to regarding the inspiration, design or decorating of your kitchen?   Bobby Herr, owner of Barbara Herr Kitchens in Marietta  Also, the homeowner, Sandy, did the decorating.

Bobby, please tell us about this project from a designer’s perspective:

“The goal of the project was to create a room that worked for the entire family.  Giving Sandy, an avid cook, baker and collector, an area to create in, while giving her a chance to interact with family and friends.

After receiving the footprint of the proposed area we generated six concept plans that Brad, Sandy and ourselves massaged to develop the final direction.

We wanted it to be  an area where multiple cooks could work, grandchildren could do their homework, a desk area for bill paying, and a seating area to watch TV and view the garden.

We placed the two islands, support columns, and cooking hearth along the axis line created by the cathedral ceiling.

The dining room pass thru and living room egress were added to extend the flow of light and function into the rest of the home.

The cooking hearth houses the spices, oils, and cookware with the main sink and refrigerator just being steps away.

The mixer is near the prep sink in order to throw a dirty spatula into the sink and relates to the location of the ovens and the lower pastry rolling area.

The cornice moldings wrap the entire area.

The best part of the kitchen was spending time with the homeowners and being able to taste anything Sandy had created.” ~ Bobby Herr, Barbara Herr Kitchens

Any other comments related to revealing your kitchen’s profile?

The original extension of our home that includes the kitchen and family room were drawn by John Schniepp of Schniepp Design and Drafting.  The kitchen layout, colors, cabinet stain, special features, and window selection etc. were by Bobby Herr. The general contractor was Don Fure of Don Fure Construction.

Do you have unique kitchen features that you love?

“Yes, we love our Mocketts, which are towers of 3 outlets that lift up through the counter (www.mockett.com)!  We have a long counter without room for outlets in the backsplash, however we wanted to make sure we had plenty of power sources for small appliances. Judy at Colonial Craft Kitchens introduced us to Mocketts. We also love our Adorne by Legrand under cabinet system. Our outlets, light switches, USB ports and lighting are hidden under the cabinet to have a clean backsplash. We also used Adorne light switches throughout the first floor. Deck mounted garbage disposal air switch buttons are used to maintain the clean look. We included a TV in a cabinet behind pocket doors so not to miss any play of the big game.”

Was there a cabinet maker, builder, or anyone you’d like to give credit to regarding the inspiration, design or decorating of your kitchen?

“Don Klinger (Value By Design) was the architect who beautifully designed our house to keep it within the character of the neighborhood, but also captured the Italian-style “piazza” we wanted for the rear patio. The large windows at the rear of the kitchen allow us to enjoy the “piazza” even when inside. Judy Hays at Colonial Craft Kitchens spent a lot of time with us custom designing the perfect kitchen for our lifestyle.  Chip Arnold Designs, who helped us select the exterior and interior wall colors, painted the color &amp decorative painting finishes and the pantry door.  Our builder, O’Shea & Brubaker, who worked tirelessly (and patiently!) with us as we searched for unique features to include in our home. We couldn’t be happier with the finished product.”

Any other comments related to revealing your kitchen’s profile?

” We wanted to make sure that the kitchen would be the center of the home and perfect for entertaining as every gathering always ends up in the kitchen! The kitchen is situated so that while we are in the kitchen, we are still a part of the party whether it’s in the great room or outside on the patio. We positioned the main sink on the island so that we could clean-up while still talking to our guests. One must-have was a bar area to mix cocktails and Kevin O’Shea and Judy (Colonial Craft) worked hard to make it a reality as it meant moving beams and adding a third sink to the kitchen.  We also have granite from Lesher Natural Stone, Quartz, & Tile in our master bath, master closet/dressing room, and powder room.”
