Q & A: Will weak acids stain granite?

Customer Question:
Question? It says on the maintenance/care sheet that natural stone is sensitive to acid; such things as fruit juice, vinegar, wine, lemon juice, and I imagine tomatoes and tomato juice. I cana lot and use vinegar when I do pickles. I also can a lot of tomato products. When I am canning with vinegar and tomatoes I will definitely be getting these items on the counter top. Does that mean I will have a stained counter top as soon as I start working with these items this summer? I also can peaches and other fruits. Will they stain the granite counter top?
Please give me some guidance as to how I can continue all my canning and still maintain a stain free counter top!

Our Reply:
Thanks for the question!  You don’t need to worry.  You have granite.  Weak acids and bases will not affect your granite.  Only certain natural stones that are calcareous in nature are of concern.  Stones such as marble, limestone, onyx or travertine would be a concern for weak acids.
I love to can also, make red sauces and cook in general.  We have granite and there has never been a problem.  So have fun canning this summer while enjoying your new counter tops!

Customer Response:
Yes, we are very happy with our granite counter top.

Thank  you so much for your reply. OK, I am relieved to know that I can continue all my canning and not worry about our granite counter top. We really do love it and have gotten many compliments from friends and family in the short time we have had it.

Note:

Here’s mom Lesher’s counter-top at Thanksgiving. On the granite there was food of all kinds everywhere; as it was being cooked and then consumed! With most granites, there is no need to worry about staining.  Your sales person will inform you of precautions, if any, based on your color selection.
