Designer Spotlight: Kevin Ohlinger

Today we’d like to introduce you to a local designer, Kevin Ohlinger, and share a special project that he accomplished with us.  You can go to his website and read an overview about him here.
Kevin has used our services on several projects in Central PA.  Today we’d like to share with you a special project that he designed specifically for himself in his own home.  It’s special to us because it’s not one of our everyday projects that runs through the shop, but it’s a project that takes advantage of our realm of scope when it comes to the terms “custom”, specifically  “custom mill work”.  Let’s start with the question most may have; what is mill work?  In this context it’s a process of cutting away material.  At Lesher Natural Stone Quartz & Tile we have the experience, capabilities, machines, and take the extra time to do this type of skilled custom work.  It is truly an art.
We started the project with a 4 inch thick slab of Navona Travertine which is a stone that is quarried and imported from Italy.  It’s defined as this:
Trav-er-tine (pronounced trav-er-teen)
Travertine is a natural stone from the limestone family. It is made of calcium carbonate which is found in the form of deposits near hot springs.  The calcium carbonate is left behind from water perking up from the ground.  Small tunnels or holes are the result.   Water movement causes the erosion of the stone, creating numerous holes of varying sizes.   This gives it a rustic or weathered look.  This natural stone was frequently used in ancient times as a building material.

After it was cut to size, it was then put on the CNC machine to be milled into a sink vanity top.

Once the shape was complete on the CNC, the final polishing and filling of holes was done by hand.

And now let’s see how it looks in Kevin’s home.  Kevin designed and built this one of a kind vanity.  It’s a modern design cabinet and wall unit made of zebra wood.
I think the zebra wood with the color variations was a perfect match for the Navona Travertine stone.  Both have a natural look in a modern design application.  What do you think?
